Understanding the CogAT and Iowa Assessments in 2nd Grade
Each year, all second-grade students in South Carolina participate in the CogAT and Iowa Assessments as part of the state's process for identifying students who may qualify for Gifted and Talented services. These assessments provide different information about how students think, reason, and demonstrate what they have learned.
CogAT – Cognitive Abilities Test
The CogAT looks at a child's reasoning and problem-solving abilities. Rather than focusing mainly on what a student has been taught in school, it examines how a student thinks and works through different types of problems.
Students complete activities in three areas:
● Verbal – reasoning with words and language
● Quantitative – reasoning with numbers and mathematical concepts
● Nonverbal – reasoning with pictures, shapes, patterns, and relationships
Iowa Assessments
The Iowa Assessments look more at a student's academic achievement—or how well the student is performing in skills typically taught in school. For South Carolina's second-grade gifted screening, students are assessed in reading and mathematics.
The most important thing for parents to know: These are not tests that children need to study or prepare for at home. Encourage your child to get a good night's sleep, eat breakfast, listen carefully to directions, take their time, and simply do their best. The assessments are designed to give us additional information about each child's unique strengths and abilities.
